Whilst at face value there is not a great deal wrong with their decision it would always be more prudent to ensure your development has cross platform compatibility..
A growing example is within the world of Smartphones. This year (information based on Q2 2011 Kantar statistics) Android OS has doubled its market share to an utterly dominant 47.1%, cementing its position at the top of the Smartphone pile. Elsewhere Apple’s dominance over the landscape has suffered a blow slipping 8% to just short of 21%. Apple’s loss has marked a rare success story for Blackberry who has made a 4% increase becoming the second most popular operating system. Predictably Nokia’s Symbian OS has suffered the major fall dropping a massive 19% but with Microsoft Windows now behind Nokia it will be one to watch.
“So what causes the changes in trends?”
The economic landscape will undoubtedly be a major influence on sales however the technology is rapidly becoming standardised with functionality. What was seen as a “must have” has quickly become “I have got” and all this at a fraction of the price Apple so shrewdly launched.
The Smartphone is in danger of becoming all too conventional. With a lack of design differentiation big name brands will sure have to work harder to convince consumers to choose their products.
In amidst all of this developers’ will naturally help shape the future. Now we communicate, watch and record media and, most importantly, talk is there anywhere left for the Smartphone to go?
